Samia Suluhu Hassan was on Friday sworn in as the president of Tanzania. The proceedings saw her make history as she becomes Tanzania’s first female president.
She took her oath of office in the commercial capital of Tanzania, Dar es Salaam.
Samia’s swearing in took place two days after the death of President John Magufuli in the office.
21-gun salute was fired in her honour immediately after taking an oath as the new commander-in-chief of the armed forces of Tanzania.
After inspection of the military, Ms Suluhu Hassan proceeded to sign a condolence book for Mr Magufuli set up in the grounds of State House.
The Swearing in was broadcast on state television. Affectionately known as Mama Samia, a name in Tanzanian culture that shows she is held in high esteem; she emphasized the need for peace and unity in her inaugural speech.
Her words, “This is a time to bury our differences, and be one as a nation. This is not a time for finger pointing, but it is a time to hold hands and move forward together.”
