Flood: Ndokwa Nation Seeks FG Interventions Over Lost Of Lives, Properties, Others

Following the eruption of flood ravaging Ndokwa nation, the leadership of Ndokwa Neku Union (NNU) has called on all tiers of government to rescue Ndokwa victims from the disaster.

The union stated that houses, farmlands and means of livelihood have been destroyed by the horrifying flood.

In a statement obtained by Africa Investigative Magazine, President General of the union, Brig. Gen. Mike Ndubisi (Rtd), called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other related agencies to take giant strides towards rescuing the flood victims, noting that a quarter of Ndokwa land has been submerged by flood.

NNU who lamented that the current flood is worst in Nigeria’s history, appealed to the government lift the people out of the menace with long term measures.

The statement reads, “I bring greetings to the good people of Ndokwa Nation and with heavy heart and sympathy for the victims of the of the surging flood that has practically destroyed our land and her people, I have found it necessary to address the issue as nature has brought it up on us.

“Having visited some of the flooded areas and communities, particularly in Ndokwa East LGA and Kwale, I conclude that a quarter of our land is submerged by flood waters thereby making life unbearable for our people, mostly the elderly, women and children.

“The sight of the suffering Ndokwa population occasioned by the flood is horrifying and never has this magnitude of devastation been witnessed in our land.

“Houses, farmlands and businesses have suffered most thereby destroying the means of livelihood of our already bewildered people who hitherto lived in squalor and substandard human conditions, and this current disaster has worsened same.

“Therefore, Ndokwa sons and daughters worldwide need to take the bull by the horn and make concerted efforts at alleviating the sufferings of our people.

“Ossissa, Afor through to Kwale, Ashaka, Okpai, Aboh, Utchi, and all other communities in Ndokwa East LGA are already submerged completely, while few persons were able to be rescued and taken to the Internally Displaced Persons, (IDP) Camps situated at the Technical College premises in Kwale and Uzomuku Primary School Ashaka. Sadly, some are caught up by the flood in their communities and help has not reached them.

“On our part as the umbrella socio-cultural body of Ndokwa Nation, we have made efforts at alleviating the sufferings of our people, but these are not enough because they are short term measures. However, due to the fact that the flood has remained longer than envisaged, we as a Union are overwhelmed in the present circumstance on account of which we are calling on well-meaning individuals, organisations, governments and corporate bodies to come to the aid of our suffering people.

“For too long, the flood has surged on and on which increases the hardship our people are subjected to by the seconds. The waters have refused to recede at least for people to return and possibly pick up the pieces of their lives but unfortunately the reverse is the case.

“NNU will not fail to appreciate individuals and corporate bodies, particularly DESOPADEC, that have made efforts to help out in this regards by establishing the IDP Camps and sending relief materials to the victims, but we note that our best has not been good enough as the suffering people need more in terms of food, shelter and medicals. We thank you for being good brothers and sisters but we need more of the helps to see our people through these current challenges.

“We also appreciate the local government administrators who have led their administration into giving our people the much needed first aid as we equally ask for more because the situation of the flooded communities are terribly bad and not good to behold – our people are in pains and suffering.

“OUR PRAYERS

“a. We call on allý tiers of government to expeditiously rise up and rescue Ndokwa from this disaster. The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA and its state counterpart – SEMA, should please swing into action by eschewing the current lethergy towards rescue efforts and do the needful which is to provide enough palliatives for our people.

“b. We have seen flood before but this current one is the worst in the history of our nation and the essence of humanity is to help one another. Governments owe it a duty to lift our people above this menace and long term measures must be put in place by envisaging the ripple effects of this flood to wit: hunger and starvation in a post flooding era.

“c. The political establishment/politicians of Ndokwa nation should do more than they are doing currently because our people need help to exit the current situation, which is so bad to the extent that to the extent that displaced persons are not feeding well.

“d. Oil companies operating in Ndokwa land cannot afford to play the ostritch at this time of our national need. We appeal to the companies to massively provide relief materials to the affected persons and communities so that lives won’t be lost avoidably. Ndokwa land is in dire need of support from the companies and to this end, NNU shall open correspondence with those companies and individuals to ensure we achieve the aim of rescuing our people.

“In view of the foregoing, it is incumbent on the NNU to monitor minute by minute developments as it concerns the flood situation and its antedant harmful effects on our people. A Committee will therefore, be set up to closely follow up situations across board for the purpose of alleviating the sufferings of the affected victims and communities.

“Once again, we are grateful to those who have in one way or the other supported the cause of giving our people assistance either in cash, kind, or both while we pray that God will reverse this trend for our people to heave a sigh of relief and return to their normal life.

“NNU is morbidly saddened by the current situation and shall leave no stone unturned to see our people smile again as we interface with governments, corporate bodies, and well-meaning individuals to make better life a reality for our people,” it said.
