Ughelli Area Commander Seeks Journalists’ Partnership in Crime-Fighting Efforts

The newly appointed Area Commander of the Ughelli Area Command, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Aliyu Shaba, has called on journalists under the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ughelli Correspondents’ Chapel, to partner with the police in addressing rising crime in the region.

ACP Shaba made the appeal during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the NUJ Ughelli Chapel to his office on Monday.

While expressing appreciation for the visit, ACP Shaba emphasized the importance of a strong working relationship between the police and the media in ensuring public safety.

“I am honoured by this visit as it will strengthen the relationship between the NUJ and the Ughelli Area Command in our joint efforts to fight crime,” he said. “We successfully implemented similar collaborations in Ovwian and Ekpan when I served as DPO. We intend to replicate those results in Ughelli so that our people can sleep with their eyes closed.”

The Area Commander noted that despite Ughelli being a smaller city than Warri, the rate of criminal activities in the area is alarmingly high. “This disturbing trend must not continue, and we are committed to reversing it,” he stated.

He further assured the journalists of professionalism within the command, adding, “If any of my officers misbehave or abuse their authority, don’t hesitate to contact me directly for disciplinary action.”

In his remarks, Comrade Sunday Apah congratulated ACP Shaba on his appointment, describing the role as one that carries significant responsibility and opportunity.

“As journalists, we acknowledge the vital role of the police in maintaining safety and order. The relationship between the media and law enforcement is essential in promoting transparency, accountability, and effective communication,” Apah said.

He stressed the union’s commitment to responsible journalism and pledged to work closely with the police in disseminating accurate information that fosters trust and community engagement.

“We see this visit as a step towards deepening collaboration in tackling crime-related issues and enhancing public awareness,” Apah added. “We are eager to hear your vision for the command and how we can support your efforts through our reportage.”

He further assured the Area Commander of the union’s readiness to support initiatives aimed at promoting peace, security, and public trust within Ughelli and its environs.

The visit marks the beginning of what both parties hope will be a fruitful partnership in promoting safety and strengthening community-police relations.
