Address Security Issues in Your States, DOPF Tells Southern Governors

The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has issued an urgent call to action, urging governors across Southern Nigeria to decisively address the worsening security situation in the region.

In a statement signed by the forum Chairman, Emmanuel Enebeli, and Secretary-General, Shedrack Onitsha, the group expressed deep concern over the increasing incidents of kidnappings, killings, and assaults perpetrated by criminal elements, many of whom operate under the guise of herdsmen and hunters.

Describing the state of insecurity as a “breaking point,” DOPF criticized what it termed the passive responses of Southern governors, warning that continued inaction could spell further hardship for citizens and loss of lives.

“The situation has reached a breaking point and the continued silence or passive responses from our state governors is no longer acceptable,” the statement read.

The Forum reminded governors of their constitutional role as Chief Security Officers of their states and called for urgent, proactive leadership to protect lives and property.

Citing the Land Use Act, DOPF emphasized that governors have both the legal authority and moral obligation to act decisively in the face of growing threats.

DOPF praised the bold stance of the Emir of Muri in Taraba State, His Royal Highness Abbas Njidda Tafida, who recently issued a 30-day ultimatum to criminal herdsmen to leave the area due to persistent kidnappings and killings.

The Forum challenged Southern leaders to show similar courage, saying “If people in the North can ask them to leave, why are Southerners treating them with leniency?” the statement quoted the Emir, urging Southern governors to reflect on this question seriously.

The Forum also warned against the engagement of traditional rulers and community leaders who have not been security-vetted, citing intelligence reports implicating some in harboring criminal elements.

Referencing the recent tragedy in Uromi, Edo State, where 16 people were killed in violence linked to suspected herders, and growing unrest in Delta communities where farmers have fled their land, the Forum said these developments underline the urgent need for state-led interventions.

The Media Executives further reminded the governors under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent directive to state leaders to “take ownership” of their security challenges and act accordingly.

“The time for rhetoric is over,” the Forum concluded. “Our people deserve peace, protection, and purposeful governance.”
