Amala: Food poison kills 4 people in Kwara
No fewer than four people have died from a food poisoning in Kwara State recently, the state government has confirmed.
The Kwara Government said the deaths of four people in the Eruda community was as a result of food poisoning from Amala and one death from gastroenteritis.
According to Dr. Amina El-Imam, the state Commissioner for health, the people developed health issues after consuming the poisonous food.
Amina said the entire health team of the Ministry visited the community following report of a family who lost a number of their relatives after consuming Lafun-Amala.
She said a visit to the community show that there was an instance of food poisoning where a 70-year-old woman fell ill and died after consuming Amala.
Amina further explained that the woman and her son, including grandchildren also consumed the same food, they were rushedto the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, where they passed away.
The commissioner alleged that the Amala, made from Lafun could have been responsible for the death
The commissioner noted that the people who consumed yam flour without Lafun were fine, while those who consumed the mixture of both Lafun and Amala fell ill and eventually some of them died.
She said several others are recovering very fast, but they are in the hospital receiving treatment.
