The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a fake medical doctor, Sunday Okon Akpan, for allegedly causing the death of a 35-year-old woman during an illegal abortion at his clinic in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the arrest was made on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, following a complaint by the deceased’s mother after her daughter, Blessing Sunday Etim, died under suspicious circumstances.
“On Tuesday, 19 August, at about 0930 hours, a man was arrested on suspicion of conducting an illegal abortion that resulted in the death of a 35-year-old woman,” DSP John said in a statement.
Investigations revealed that the suspect, who operated Full Life Medical Centre in Ikot Obio Odong, tried to dispose of the body by sneaking it into the victim’s apartment. He reportedly abandoned the corpse and fled when confronted by a co-tenant.
Detectives who visited the clinic confirmed that a premature fetus was protruding from the victim’s body, indicating a failed abortion.
Further findings showed that Akpan is not a licensed medical doctor or nurse, but a community health practitioner who had been performing unsafe abortions and other illegal medical procedures under false pretenses.
“The suspect, a resident of Afaha Offiong in Nsit Ibom LGA, is not medically qualified. He used the facility to conduct illegal abortions,” DSP John stated.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered a full investigation, and the deceased’s body has been deposited in a morgue for autopsy. The suspect is currently in custody as inquiries continue.
