DOPF Urges Dialogue Amid Brewing Ethnic Tensions in Warri

The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has raised alarm over rising tension among ethnic nationalities in Warri, particularly in Warri South Local Government Area, warning that an escalation could have severe socio-economic consequences for Delta State.

In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Oghenekparobo Ehvwubare, FIMC, ANIPR, the Forum stressed that peace remains the bedrock of unity, development, and coexistence. The intervention comes as the world marked the 2025 International Day of Peace on September 21, themed “Act Now for a Peaceful World.”

Quoting the United Nations, DOPF reminded stakeholders that peace is not a distant aspiration but a present responsibility, requiring urgent commitment from individuals, communities, governments, and traditional institutions.

“Delta State is already grappling with insecurity. Any further escalation of ethnic hostilities in Warri; the commercial nerve centre of the state would worsen the situation and cripple economic and social activities,” the statement warned.

The Forum urged the state government, security agencies, and traditional rulers in Warri and its environs to step up interventions through dialogue, inclusivity, and proactive engagement to sustain peace.

It further appealed to youths, community leaders, and stakeholders to act with restraint, noting that conflict leaves scars that may take decades to heal, while peace fosters unity, growth, and prosperity.

“Warri has long been the economic and social heartbeat of Delta State. Allowing ethnic tensions to escalate in such a vital hub is unacceptable. The path to lasting peace lies in dialogue, inclusivity, and mutual understanding.

“As we observe this year’s International Day of Peace, we are reminded to ‘act now for a peaceful world’, choosing conversation over conflict, tolerance over division, and unity over discord,” the Forum emphasized.
