A statement on Wednesday by the National Publicity Secretary of the NBA, Akorede Lawal says the incident is despicable, disrespect for the Nation’s judiciary and sanctity of the court premises
The statement reads: “The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has decried the despicable altercation which took place yesterday, 25/7/2023, at the premises of the Federal High Court, Lagos, between operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) over the custody of the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele pending the perfection of his bail conditions.
It adds that “the NBA, particularly denounced the DSS for its peculiar part in the disgraceful and unlawful conduct, considering the fact that the Court had earlier ordered that the suspended CBN Governor be kept in a Correctional Centre pending the perfection of his bail conditions.”
On Tuesday, DSS operatives had assualted some officials of the NCS over disagreement on which agency should take custody of the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, who was arraigned before the court and granted bail.
Despite the court’s order that Emefiele be held in the custody of the NCS until he was able to perfect the bail granted him, the heavily armed DSS operatives overpowered the prison officials and took the suspended CBN chief away.
