Gunmen on Wednesday ambushed the convoy of former Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chris Ngige, along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area, killing one person and injuring several others.
According to Vanguard, the attackers, who disguised themselves in police and military uniforms, opened fire on the pilot vehicle, killing a police officer and making away with his rifle and uniform.
A woman who attempted to record the incident with her mobile phone was shot dead instantly. A nearby shop owner who rushed out to observe the commotion was struck by bullets and sustained severe injuries.
He reportedly lost a large amount of blood and is scheduled for surgery to remove bullet fragments. He is currently in stable condition.
The escort leader, who also sustained gunshot wounds, has undergone surgery and is expected to make a full recovery. The pilot vehicle was riddled with bullets during the attack.
Dr. Ngige was not in the convoy at the time of the incident.
In a statement, Mr. Fred Chukwuelobe, the former press secretary to Ngige, confirmed the attack.
He said: “I spoke with His Excellency, Dr. Ngige, who confirmed the incident and assured that adequate medical care is being provided for the injured.
He extends his condolences to the family of the woman killed while recording the attack.”
As of press time, the Anambra State Police Command had not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
