The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has expressed concern over what he described as the rising moral decay in society, following the arrest of two suspects for allegedly staging a kidnap.
Police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, apprehended the suspects identified as 23-year-old Nmesoma Josephine Nwoye and her 24-year-old boyfriend, Chibuike Ogbu, after investigations revealed that Nmesoma conspired with Chibuike to fake her own abduction.
According to the command, the suspects initially demanded a ₦15 million ransom from Nmesoma’s family. After negotiations, the family paid ₦3 million, part of which ₦1.2 million was recovered by the police during the operation.
“The suspects were arrested after intelligence-led operations uncovered the staged kidnap. This act is a clear indication of the growing moral decadence in society,” CP Orutugu stated.
The Commissioner urged parents, guardians, and religious leaders to intensify efforts in instilling discipline and sound moral values in young people.
He further warned youths against engaging in self-destructive ventures, stressing that the law will always catch up with offenders, regardless of their tactics.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
