NDLEA, Police, Declare War On Drug Barrons In Ughelli

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), will wipe off illicit drugs and hard substances from Ughelli and its environs by arresting unauthorized dealers.

NDLEA Commandant, Delta State, Barr John Tunde, divulged this during 1-Day Sensitization Workshop on ‘Illegal Substances and Drug Abuse’ held in Ughelli, Delta State, on June 07, 2023.

The commandant who spoke through ACN Silas Omobude said the Agency would collaborate with the police and community leaders to smoke out drugs Barrons in the area.

Omodube stated that consumption of hard drugs and illegal substances posed a security threat, alleging that users under the influence of the substances act without recourse to conscience.

According to him, anyone in possession of an illegal substance will be arrested and prosecuted irrespective of the quantity.

He added that the consumption of India Hemp and other influencers has caused society more harm than good, adding that the Agency is set to take action against drug offenders if precautionary measures are not taken.

He listed controlled drugs to include India Hemp, tramadol, cocaine, Heroin, Methamphetamine, Rophynol/Swinol, Diazepam, Codeine Cough Syrup, a Mixture of Cannabis/dry gin popularly called monkey tail, and so on.

In his part, the state commissioner of police, Abass Wale, who was represented by the Area Commander, Ughelli, DCP. Ademola Adebayo alleged that the effects of hard drugs are felt not only on Ughelli Community but the entire country.

He decried the pedigree at which teenagers consumed illegal substances, saying that “we are in the emergency, and emergency should be declared for the society to be drug-free.”

While advising parents to caution their children against drug abuse, Ademola further alleged that some children emulated the act from their parents, noting that adolescents are likely to use drugs if their parents do.

In his opening remark, the Ovie of Ughelli Kingdom, HRM. (Dr.) Ojakovo Wilson JP, Oharisi 111, thanked the conflict prevention council, Delta State, for the programme and promised that the traditional rulers in the LGA will join in the fight against drug abuse.

Dr Ojakovo who assured the law enforcement agency of his total support, charged the security operatives to flush out the ruthless elements irrespective of whose horse is gored.

He advised Community leaders to synergize with NDLEA and other respective authorities in carrying out proper action.

Reacting, the Lead Consultant, Conflict Prevention Council, Pastor Edewor Egedegbe, said the occasion is aimed at transforming suspected drug addicts and peddlers of illicit substances to desist from such acts.

In a message he titled, “Moral and Value Decadence: the need for Value Re-orientation”, Edewor expressed his displeasure over the high rate of kidnapping, prostitution, and other forms of social vices perpetrated by youths, which according to him, was coaxed by hard drugs.

He implored youths and community leaders to take advantage of the occasion to reform drug abusers near them.
