Nigerian Gov Bans Cooking, Fish Roasting, Others In Market

Abia State governor, Mr Okezie Ikpeazu has banned roasting of fishes and other animals within the major markets in the state.

The ban became imperative after the fire outbreak on February 08, 2023, at line 27 of Ngwa Road Market that destroyed two shops was trailed to a sparked by a fish roaster’s stove which was forgotten in the market after closure.

The governor who thanked God that the market authorities and other sympathisers were able to utilize fire-fighting equipment to put off the fire, also placed embargo on cooking in the market.

In a statement issued by the commissioner for trade and investment, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, and obtained by Africa Investigative Magazine, the governor mandated the Ministry of Trade and Investment to assess the level of destruction on goods at the two affected shops with a view to supporting the concerned traders.

“We wish to encourage all market executives to fully implement the guidelines on fire protection within our markets including ensuring that no flammable material is allowed to be stored within the market as well as effectively distributing fire extinguisher,” he said.
