Onyeme Urges NBC to Fast-Track Resolution of Delta’s Boundary Disputes

Delta State Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, FCA, has called on the National Boundary Commission (NBC) to expedite action on the lingering interstate boundary disputes involving Delta and its neighbouring states.

Onyeme made the appeal on Friday in Asaba while receiving the NBC delegation led by its Director-General, Surveyor Adamu Adaji, who was on an advocacy visit to the state.

He stressed that Delta State is eager to see long-standing issues, particularly the Delta–Edo boundary dispute, amicably resolved to prevent further tension among border communities.

“It is the desire of the Delta State Government that the National Boundary Commission should fast-track amicable resolutions that will put an end to the series of lingering contentious challenges associated with our various interstate boundaries, especially the Delta/Edo Interstate Boundary,” Onyeme stated.

The Deputy Governor further urged the Commission to give equal attention to other disputed boundaries involving Delta and Ondo, as well as Delta’s boundaries with Anambra, Bayelsa, and Rivers.

He noted that the state is committed to working closely with the Commission to ensure that all five interstate boundary issues are settled in the shortest possible time.

While commending the NBC for its efforts over the years despite challenges encountered during actual delineation exercises, Onyeme said the state has been proactive through its Boundary Committee in promoting peace among communities.

“On our part, the Delta State Boundary Committee has made several efforts to appeal to our communities to live in peace and harmony with their neighbours in order to enhance peaceful co-existence. Sustainable development cannot thrive without peace and security,” he emphasized.

He expressed confidence in the NBC’s ability to deliver justice on all boundary matters concerning Delta State, in line with the objectives of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda.

Earlier, NBC Director-General Adamu Adaji said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration with the state’s Boundary Committee ahead of planned activities on the Delta-Edo boundary.

“Delta State shares common interstate boundaries with Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ondo, and Rivers, and I am pleased to inform Your Excellency that each of these boundary processes has continued to receive the attention of the Commission,” he said.

The meeting was attended by the Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Chief Emamusi Obiodeh; the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, SAN; and other top government officials.
