Super Falcons’ Nnadozie, Coach Madugu Earn Ballon d’Or Nominations After WAFCON Triumph

In a historic moment for Nigerian women’s football, Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and head coach Justin Madugu have been nominated for major honours at the 2025 Ballon d’Or awards.

Nnadozie, the team’s captain and standout performer at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), has been shortlisted for the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award. Her nomination follows a string of spectacular performances, including crucial penalty saves and consistent command of her penalty area, which helped Nigeria secure its record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

Coach Justin Madugu has been nominated for the prestigious Women’s Coach of the Year award. Since taking over the reins of the national team in late 2023, Madugu has revitalised the Falcons, implementing a more disciplined and attacking brand of football. His leadership proved instrumental as the team overcame fierce competition, including host nation Morocco and defending champions South Africa, to lift the continental trophy.

The duo’s recognition on the global stage is a testament to Nigeria’s growing influence in women’s football. Their success in Morocco has not only reinforced Nigeria’s dominance in African football but also brought international acclaim to the team’s development and resilience.

Despite the celebration surrounding the Nigerian nominations, Spain’s Aitana Bonmatí remains the favourite to clinch the Women’s Ballon d’Or for a third consecutive time.

The 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony is set to take place later this year, where global football’s finest will be honoured for their exceptional performances over the past season.
