The Meaning Of Escape And Escapee In Nigerian Society

MOMENT OF TRUTH with Richard.

By Richard Ugbeh –

On several write up relating to kidnappers and their victims, we come across the word ‘ESCAPE’. When we discuss issues at correctional centers across the country, the same word ESCAPE is equally mentioned at the end, hence, the Moment of Truth took it upon ourselves to find out if actually escape means escape in the real sense.

MOT defines Escape as sudden disappearance of persons, things kept in a particular place/position and later disappeared unknowingly to known/ unknown place.

Since the Advent of Hard-way as the only means of making money, “Kidnapping” became a lucrative business to the never do well, blood sucking individuals like Vampires. Escape became a regular features in narrating the unpleasant tales of abductors.

How could one or more than 20 people in kidnappers DEN escaped unnoticed in midst of security guards with A.K47 and other dangerous weapons? Where their sleeping occasioned by the excess taking of Alcohol that paved the way for Escape?

Another area the word ESCAPE I found it difficult to believe is in our Prison Yards. On several occasions I have visited such places and come to conclusions that Escape from such environment is not possible without the aids of the people in charge.

This reminds me of a popular saying that “Nothing moves without a mover”. Go to some establishment, you hear something like N30 billion Escape from the accounting department. Escape to where? A Big question!

The only Escape I can agree for now are, Escape from poverty by working hard, from dangers by minding our ways day and night, from Hunger by tiling the soil not minding the sun and rain, from accident by driving at the normal speed limit, obeying all traffic rules and regulations, including from illiterate to literate by studying etc.

It’s all Hyperbole, saying unpleasant things in a pleasant way that’s the word ESCAPE for you in Naija. I may suggest we create Ministry of Escape saddles with the responsibility of looking into means and ways funds of individuals, government properties etc escaped untraceable.

From the confessions of a man that saw death in hands of the kidnappers, at times, if they are many in their custody, few will be allowed to go home possibly to pass the message. I think that’s what we term Escape if not ….. As usual we appreciate you all for being there for MoT.
