YNRO Petitions IGP, Seeks Disciplinary Action Against Delta Police Officers

The Lead Activist of the Young Nigerian Rights Organization (YNRO), Comrade Victor Ojei, popularly known as Wong Box, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, over alleged abuse of office, obstruction of justice, and complicity in corruption against the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Admin), Delta State Command, DCP Abdul Adejo.

In the petition addressed to the Force Disciplinary Committee at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, and copied to the Police Service Commission, ICPC, National Human Rights Commission, and other relevant agencies, Ojei accused DCP Adejo of administrative misconduct and interference in a criminal investigation involving senior officers of the Delta State Police Command.

According to the activist, the petition stemmed from a robbery incident at his private residence in Asaba, which allegedly involved certain police officers.

He stated that on August 6, 2025, he submitted a formal petition to the Delta State Commissioner of Police seeking a transparent investigation. However, he claimed the process was compromised by bias and improper influence from senior officers.

Ojei particularly accused the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, of using his personal social media platform to make prejudicial comments about the case, thereby undermining the investigation and violating his constitutional right to a fair hearing under Section 36(1) of the 1999 Constitution. He also cited the conduct of CSP Emeka Iheanacho, DPO of A Division, Asaba, whom he alleged acted with bias during the preliminary investigation.

The petitioner further alleged that while at the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Intelligence) on August 29, 2025, SP Edafe Bright unlawfully declared him “wanted” on social media and circulated the notice to national blogs, including Linda Ikeji’s Blog, even though he was physically present at the police premises at that time. Ojei described the act as a calculated attempt to defame and intimidate him.

He added that DCP Abdul Adejo subsequently ordered that his petitions, which accused SP Edafe Bright and CSP Emeka Iheanacho of complicity in the robbery, be handed over to CSP Iheanacho for investigation. Ojei described the move as a gross conflict of interest and a violation of the Criminal Code Act, which prohibits abuse of office.

Relying on relevant provisions of the law, including Sections 98 and 167 of the Criminal and Penal Codes, and the ICPC Act (2000), Ojei maintained that DCP Adejo’s actions amounted to abuse of authority, obstruction of justice, and corrupt administrative interference. He also alleged that the officer’s conduct violated constitutional provisions guaranteeing citizens’ rights to fair hearing and protection against abuse of power.

The activist demanded an independent investigation into the roles of DCP Abdul Adejo, SP Edafe Bright, and CSP Emeka Iheanacho; the immediate disciplinary action against DCP Adejo by the Police Service Commission; and a public retraction and apology from SP Edafe Bright for the alleged defamatory publication. He also called for the ICPC to investigate DCP Adejo for corrupt practices and for the Force Headquarters to set up a new, impartial panel to investigate the robbery case.

Comrade Ojei emphasized that the alleged conduct of the Delta Police officers, if left unchecked, would erode public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force and further weaken the integrity of the justice system. He urged the Inspector-General of Police to take decisive action to restore public trust and ensure accountability in the Force.

Signed copies of the petition were also forwarded to the Chairmen of the Police Service Commission and ICPC, the National Human Rights Commission, the Department of State Services, the Attorney-General of the Federation, and the Delta State Police Command for necessary action.
