Zone 5 Police Arrest Teacher In Delta For Exposing Misappropriation Of N57.2million

The chairman of the Teachers’ Reformation Forum in Isoko South LGA, Delta State, Mr. Solomon Oberido has been arrested for exposing financial misappropriation at the teachers’ union.

He was arrested on January 25, 2022, by Zone 5 Police, Benin City, Edo State, for crying out over the missing N57.2million from the treasury.

It was suspected that the Nigeria Union of Teachers’ (NUT) chairman in the council area, Mr. Festus Basil Erabere, planned the arrest to bury the alleged embezzlement of the union’s funds which amounted to N57,249,381.00

Africa Investigative Magazine gathered that Mr. Solomon Oberido was a true ambassador of reformation who campaigned against corruption in the NUT in the area.

It was further gathered that Oberido had earlier written to the State’s Ministry of Justice over the issue who transferred the case to the commissioner of police to invite the NUT chairman and his cabinet.

A source close to the teachers’ reformation forum and preferred anonymity hinted Festus Erabere and his men turned down the invitation by the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Bureau (SCIIB).

According to him, ‘NUT chieftain sent a legal representative who told the police operatives that his clients were indisposed and that they would appear before the police on Monday.

Meanwhile, Festus Erabere had on different occasions, denied the alleged misappropriation of the union’s fund.

The petitioner was, however, waiting patiently for the police command to question the suspects over the missing fund, only for him to be arrested by the police from the above.

Wondering when it has become a crime for exposing corruption and embezzlement of public funds, the Source called for the immediate release of Solomon Oberido.

He described Oberido as a teacher and an advocate who is committed to the welfare of its members.
