2023 Elections: What It Takes To Be Politically Wise

By Odili Ogochukwu –

In a country like Nigeria where the same categories of politicians migrate from one political Party to another for voracious political interest, political civilization is the bedrock for electoral choice as Nigerian electoral processes have gone beyond supporting a political party but candidates who can give an account of stewardship.

Consequently, voters are saddled with the responsibility of embracing the candidates who have the prospects of securing the constituents’ fundamentals during their days in office. The political parties in Nigeria are children of the same ugly parents, background and perception whose confusion needs comprehension.

95 percent of the candidates attacking one another in varying party platforms take their roots from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This is evident in what played out in political rallies or campaigns. It is common to see a former party member berating his old party on the platform of a new party without regards to facts that he contributed to the mess.

Incredibly, the condemnations of parties by former members are tricks, tactics and gimmicks employed by politicians to bury their incompetence. A competent leader should brag with his accomplishments on campaign ground not launching verbal attack on former and other parties for cheap recognition, even when it’s obvious the former have no project to their credit in areas of delivery network.

This is 21st century. It is not wise enough to continue with usual political format of voting one political party throughout the election. It is time to breed new political leaders who are willing to address concrete issues the way they are. This is the right time to part ways with ancient, desperate and greedy political gladiators that adopted aggressive ward to ward campaign strategy with 5/5 campaign slogan to further delude the masses.

For instance, no political party in Delta State deserves victory at polls from the top to the least positions as portrayed by the parties’ 5/5 campaign slogan. Some of the candidates left no footprint in the various positions they previously or presently occupied, thus, should not be allowed to blow up another opportunity at the detriment of the people.

It is ridiculous to return the same person whose impact was not felt as a House of Assembly Member or as a Senator to office in 2023. Therefore, it worthwhile to acknowledge that one who fails as a Speaker of House of Assembly will also fail as a governor. Similarly, do not expect a miracle from someone who could not deliver dividends of democracy as a Deputy Senate President if entrusted with a higher responsibility. It is of interest to note that a a mindless House of Assembly member will remain unreasonable even as a deputy governor. Be wise!

A voter with right sense of judgment should critique, compare the candidates of different parties seeking to occupy the same position to vote the better. It is not indiscrete to consider a party for presidency and another party for house of assembly as well as a different party for senatorial positions. The reason is not far-fetched. Majority of the parties were carried away with money, and did not feature best candidates for some positions. Do not vote a candidate because of someone. Do not vote because he/she promises you a mere appointment. The appointment may not come, even if it comes, it may not be enough to take you to your destination.

Vote for the betterment of the socio-economic strength of your area. Vote a candidate who is willing to do a new thing in a new way for the maximum benefit of the public. Think Well! Use Your PVC Wisely!!
