The Chief Press Secretary, CPS, to Governor Sheriff Oborewori of Delta State, Sir Festus Ahon, has assured the newly sworn-in Executive of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Delta State Council, of the state government’s readiness to collaborate with the union to move the state forward.
Ahon gave the assurance when he played host to the new executives led by the newly elected Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, in his office in Government House, Asaba.
He urged the Chairman and the new executives to be magnanimous in victory and ensure that they carry everybody along, adding that the union can only move forward when it remained united.
“Let us do things that will improve the lot of the union, because, at the end of the day, we have only one union; let us do things that will project the union in good light and not things that will jeopardize the image of the union”, he counselled.
Ahon commended members of the union for their peaceful conduct during the entire electioneering campaign that climaxed in the emergence of the new executive committee and congratulated all the members of the executive on their victory at the poll.
In his remarks, the State Chairman of the NUJ, Delta State Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, thanked the Chief Press Secretary for giving audience to the members of the executive and for his neutrality throughout the electioneering process.
Oyowe promised to give the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborewori a positive visibility, rather than an aggressive visibility, adding that the position of the union towards the government is one of collaboration and not confrontation.
He said; “we will try to talk to our members to ensure that this government is not painted in bad light, because, if anything happens, it will affect all of us. There is a saying that if a doctor or a nurse makes mistake, it will affect one or two lives but if a journalist makes a mistake, it will affect the whole community; that is our perception of how important our role is.”
