Benin Army Restores Control After Failed Coup Attempt

Benin’s government says security forces have restored full control after a group of mutinous soldiers briefly seized the national broadcaster early Sunday and announced the removal of President Patrice Talon.

According to Foreign Minister Olushegun Adjadi Bakari, the situation “is under control,” while government spokesperson Wilfried Houngbedji told the Associated Press that “everything is fine.”

The soldiers, identifying themselves as the Military Committee for Refoundation, appeared on state television for several minutes, declaring the dissolution of state institutions, closure of national borders, and suspension of political parties.

They claimed to be acting under the authority of Lieutenant Colonel Tigri Pascal and announced the formation of a transitional government.

The broadcast followed reports of gunfire at Camp Guezo, located near the president’s private residence. In a security alert, the French Embassy in Cotonou warned its citizens to remain indoors as a precaution.

Security sources say the rebellion was “swiftly neutralised” within minutes by the Republican Guard. Roughly ten soldiers were involved in the attempted takeover, which aimed to seize control of key national infrastructure, including the state broadcaster.

Multiple officials have confirmed that President Talon is safe and has been moved to a secure location pending further investigations.

Talon, who assumed office in 2016 and was re-elected in 2021, is due to complete his second and final term next year under Benin’s two-term constitutional limit.

The coup attempt comes amid rising political tension following a recent parliamentary vote extending presidential terms from five to seven years, while retaining the two-term limit; a change that has sparked public debate ahead of the 2026 transition.

Authorities say an official statement will be issued shortly to clarify the events surrounding the attempted coup and outline new security measures.

While Cotonou remains tense, officials report that the capital is stable, and residents have been urged to follow only verified government communication.
