Gbaramatu Stakeholders Seek Government Intervention Over Alleged Threats to Ijaw Communities

Stakeholders of the Gbaramatu Kingdom have raised the alarm over alleged threats issued to the Ijaw residents of Ikantu and Ijaghala communities by individuals believed to be from the Itsekiri ethnic nationality.

They called on both the federal and Delta State governments to intervene promptly to prevent any potential violence and ensure the safety of the affected communities.

Addressing a press briefing on Monday, June 16, 2025, the Fiyewei (Spokesperson) of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Chief Godspower Gbenekama, expressed grave concern over the escalating tension.

He disclosed that since discussions surrounding the delineation of electoral boundaries began, indigenes of Ikantu and Ijaghala have allegedly been subjected to threats of eviction.

“We, the Ijaws, will not fight the Itsekiri people, but they must leave the Ikantu and Ijaghala people alone,” Chief Gbenekama stated. “We are peaceful people, but if any indigene of these communities is attacked for tracing their ancestral roots to Gbaramatu Kingdom, then the gods will fight for us.”

Chief Gbenekama emphasized that every Nigerian has the constitutional right to live peacefully anywhere in the country, including Ikantu and Ijaghala.

He appealed to those behind the threats to desist from such actions, warning that the tension could escalate if left unchecked.

“There is freedom of speech, movement, and association in this country. The mere fact that our people are being threatened is enough reason for government at all levels to take swift and decisive action,” he said.

He called on the federal and state authorities to prioritize the protection of lives and property, particularly in these vulnerable communities.

Drawing attention to past violent incidents in other regions, including the killings in Benue State, Chief Gbenekama urged security agencies to be proactive in averting similar occurrences in the Niger Delta.

He also appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to expedite the completion of the delineation process in Warri Federal Constituency, adding that the delay has only heightened tensions and hindered development in the area.

“INEC should come and complete its work. There is peace in Warri Federal Constituency, so why is our case different? The Ijaws will continue to call on God to help us,” he declared.

Chief Gbenekama also urged the state government to investigate and apprehend suspected arms dealers allegedly stockpiling weapons for potential attacks against the Ijaws of Gbaramatu Kingdom and other neighboring Ijaw communities.

He reaffirmed his commitment of the Ijaw people to peace while stressing the need for authorities to act swiftly to maintain stability and protect citizens’ rights in the region.
