Industrial Development Key to Job Creation and Human Capital Growth in Delta — Engr. Osunde

By Ifeanyi Omenogor

The Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Asaba Branch, Engr. Ikechukwu C. Osunde, has emphasized that industrial development remains one of the most effective pathways to sustainable job creation, economic diversification, and human capacity development.

Engr. Osunde made this assertion during an industrial visit by the NSE Asaba Branch to the Beta Glass Delta Plant in Ughelli, Delta State, where a delegation of twenty-five engineers from various engineering disciplines were exposed to the operational and technological processes within the facility.

Speaking during the visit, Engr. Osunde noted that the establishment of industries such as the Beta Glass Delta Plant demonstrates the critical role that manufacturing and industrial investments play in strengthening the economic base of any state.

According to him, industries serve as powerful engines of economic growth, providing direct employment opportunities for engineers, technicians, and skilled workers while also generating extensive indirect employment through logistics networks, supply chains, equipment maintenance services, and numerous ancillary businesses.

He further stressed that beyond employment generation, industrial facilities play a significant role in building local technical expertise and human capital, especially among young professionals and graduates seeking practical experience in engineering and manufacturing sectors.

Engr. Osunde therefore called on the Delta State Government and other relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts toward attracting and establishing more manufacturing and industrial plants across the three senatorial districts of Delta State—Delta North, Delta Central, and Delta South.

He explained that the strategic distribution of industrial investments across the state would not only ensure balanced economic development but would also position Delta State as a major hub for manufacturing, engineering innovation, and technological advancement in Nigeria.

The NSE Chairman also reaffirmed the commitment of the NSE Asaba Branch to supporting the developmental vision of the Delta State Government, noting that the engineering body aligns with the administration of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. (Elder) (Dr.) Sheriff F. O. Oborevwori, in advancing the Renewed Hope for MORE Agenda aimed at driving economic transformation, infrastructure development, and industrial growth across the twenty-five Local Government Areas of the state.

Engr. Osunde emphasized that the successful operation of industries such as the Beta Glass plant provides a clear example of how strategic investments in manufacturing can significantly reduce unemployment, stimulate innovation, and strengthen the industrial ecosystem of the state.

He noted that the presence of such factories also creates opportunities for technology transfer, skills acquisition, research collaboration, and professional development, thereby equipping the next generation of engineers with the knowledge required to contribute meaningfully to national development.

The NSE Chairman also used the opportunity to commend the management and staff of the Beta Glass Delta Plant for their professionalism, technical excellence, and commitment to maintaining high standards in industrial operations.

He expressed appreciation to the company for granting members of the engineering profession the opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the plant’s production systems, maintenance practices, quality assurance processes, and operational management.

According to him, the industrial visit forms part of the ongoing strategic initiatives of the NSE Asaba Branch to bridge the gap between engineering practice, industrial development, and economic growth in Delta State.

Engr. Osunde, who was accompanied on the visit by twenty-five engineers representing various fields of engineering practice, was received by the managemen
