Nigerians Urged to Take Precautions as Global Respiratory Infections Rise

Amid growing concerns over a surge in respiratory infections and human metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreaks worldwide, public health experts have urged Nigerians to take immediate precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones.

The call to action comes as reports from China indicate overwhelmed hospitals and a rise in cases of HMPV, influenza A, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

While no cases have been reported in Nigeria, experts warn that the country’s porous borders and lack of sustained preparedness make it vulnerable to outbreaks.

“We must take proactive measures to prevent the spread of respiratory infections in Nigeria,” said Prof. Wellington Oyibo, a tropical disease specialist.

“Simple practices like washing hands with soap and water, covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, and self-isolation when sick can significantly reduce the spread of these infections.”

Renowned virologist Prof. Oyewale Tomori echoed Oyibo’s sentiments, criticizing Nigeria’s inconsistent approach to disease prevention and monitoring.

“We lack sustained preparedness, which leaves us unprepared for outbreaks like HMPV or even Lassa fever, which re-emerge yearly,” Tomori said.

The experts’ warnings serve as a timely reminder for Nigerians to take personal responsibility for their health while urging authorities to strengthen national preparedness for HMPV and future outbreaks.

In the meantime, Nigerians are advised to remain vigilant, practice good hygiene, and seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms of respiratory infections.
