Over 55 Dead In Central African Republic Boat Mishap
More than 55 people have lost their lives in a boat mishap at the Central African Republic, CAR, during the weekend.
CAR authorities reported that the 300 people onboard were on their way to a funeral on Friday when the vessel capsized.
The sad incident took place on the Mpoko River, close to the capital, Bangui.
Footage of the accident on social media indicated that people falling into the water, while others jumped in an attempt to reach the banks of the river.
Boat accident is a frequent phenomenon in the Central African Republic.
Speaking to local station Radio Guira on April 20, 2024, civil protection head, Thomas Djimasse, said rescuers recovered 58 lifeless bodies from the water, while the statistics of others still under the water remained unknown.
Dozens of survivors are reported to be receiving treatment in hospitals in Bangui.
