A small aircraft made an emergency landing on Interstate 95 near Merritt Island, Florida, on Monday, striking a vehicle and injuring an elderly driver, authorities said.
The twin-engine Beechcraft 55 was being flown by a 27-year-old pilot when it developed a mechanical malfunction mid-flight. According to reports, the pilot was forced to attempt an emergency landing after power began to fail in both engines.
In the process of descending onto the busy highway, the aircraft collided with a Toyota Camry driven by an elderly woman. She was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
Dashcam footage from a vehicle travelling behind captured the dramatic moment the aircraft descended rapidly onto the roadway before making contact with the car.
Two people were on board the aircraft—the pilot and one passenger. The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed that neither sustained any injuries.
Brevard County Fire Rescue reported that the plane attempted the landing near the 201-mile marker on I-95 but lost balance and struck the vehicle before crashing.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has opened an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the mechanical failure and assess contributing factors.
