Residents of Abraka in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, have raised alarm over the worsening security situation in the university host community.
Hon. Enamuotor John, the Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on security matters, expressed deep concern over the wave of insecurity in the region despite the availability of security operatives.
Enamuotor, also the former youth chairman, appealed to the state government and security agencies to act swiftly to stem the rising tide of insecurity before it escalates further.
According to him, routine occurrence of kidnappings and killings in Abraka and its environ have crippled their local economic activities.
“People are abducted daily, and efforts by the government to handle it have not been enough. Our police are not helping us. Fear of abduction has driven many farmers away from their farms, while businesses close early, halting commercial activities in the once-thriving community.
“Before seven o’clock, everyone goes indoors because of kidnappers. Businesses no longer thrive. People are even kidnapped at their door steps,” he said.
While saying that the security situation in Abraka demands urgent attention, the Oborevwori’s SSA on security matters appealed to the state government and relevant authorities to work together in tackling the root causes of insecurity and ensure the safety of residents.
He further warned those behind the criminal activities to desist, stating, “Every day is for the thief, but one day is for the house owner.”
