The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has instituted a legal action against President Bola Tinubu over his failure to publicize details of N400 billion fuel subsidy savings.
SERAP took the action aftermath of speculations that the Federal Government has realized N400 billion in one month following fuel subsidy termination.
In a suit filed by SERAP lawyers, Kolawole Oluwadare, Ms Adelanke Aremo, and Ms Valentina Adegoke, the body said, “Transparency would increase public trust and confidence that these savings would be used to benefit Nigerians.”
As part of its request, SERAP is also asking for “an order of mandamus to direct and compel President Tinubu to provide details of the plans on how the savings from the removal of the subsidy on petrol, including specific projects on which the funds would be spent.”
Another request from SERAP is for “an order of mandamus to compel President Tinubu to provide details of the mechanisms that have been put in place to ensure that the savings from the removal of subsidy on petrol are not diverted into private pockets.”
SERAP claims in the lawsuit that Nigerians have a right to know how their savings are used.
