‘We Did Not Know That The Product We Imported Contains Methanol’- NNPC Director
The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company NNPC), Melee Kyari on Wednesday February 16, 2022 cleared the air on the recently imported petrol to Nigeria, saying that he was unaware it contained methanol.
The NNPC director also said that the company never knew that her deficiency would throw the masses into unspeakable hardship.
Recall that here was an importation of contaminated petrol into Nigeria which has damaged a lot of vehicles, and brought scarcity of fuel.

Investigations proved that the price of fuel has gone up, with some fuel station at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and Lagos sold N1000 per liter and N800 respectively.
NNPC error has in no small measure added to the sufferings of Nigerians that already confronted with inflation.
The sudden hike in price of fuel and coupled with its unavailability had brought queues to the Fuel Stations.

In a statement made available to newsmen, Melee Kyari noted NNPC was not careful enough to figure out that the fuel imported into Nigeria has methanol.
Hear him: “I was very clear during my first media review, and let me also repeat, again, for this purpose: first, we did not know that this product contained methanol. We absolutely did not know and your investigation will give you the reality at the end of the tunnel.

“Once you have this situation and you withdraw volumes in the market, you will have supply disruption and it comes with consequences. We are very conscious of the consequences that will come with it – the queues that you are seeing, the disruption of the economic activities that are very obvious, and the liquidated damages that can be a legal process where you may not even be able to recover your possession.
“So, we are aware of this. We regret this situation and it is completely unavoidable. We didn’t see it coming. I have apologized to Nigerians that we didn’t see it coming,” he said.
