The aspiration of Prof. Alexander Akpodiete for the Delta Central Senatorial seat on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has continued to gather momentum following a high-level strategic meeting with the leadership of the party in Abuja ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Akpodiete, a legal practitioner with over three decades of experience, met with key figures of the NDC, including the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, where discussions reportedly focused on party consolidation, grassroots mobilisation, and the future of constitutional democracy in Nigeria.
The Abuja meeting formed part of ongoing consultations aimed at strengthening the NDC’s structures across the country and positioning credible candidates for the 2027 elections.
Speaking after the meeting, Senator Dickson described Prof. Akpodiete as a committed and experienced professional with the capacity to contribute meaningfully to governance and national development.
The former Bayelsa State governor reiterated the party’s determination to provide a platform for competent Nigerians with vision, integrity, and a genuine commitment to public service.
“Our engagement was productive and focused on strengthening the party, deepening democracy, and preparing credible leaders for the future of this country,” Dickson said.
“We are building a movement that will inspire hope among Nigerians, especially young people yearning for purposeful leadership.
“Leadership is not about doing whatever you can do. Leadership is about restraint in the exercise of power for the public good, even when it is not to your personal benefit. It is about protecting our constitutional democracy and ensuring governance serves the people.”
He added that the NDC would continue consultations across the country to expand its support base and promote issue-based politics ahead of the next general elections.
Senator Dickson also acknowledged Prof. Akpodiete as a refined professional and “an American lawyer” who understands governance, leadership, and the aspirations of the people.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Prof. Akpodiete said his aspiration was driven by the desire to provide effective representation and attract meaningful development to Delta Central through his S.T.H.E.A.M Agenda.
According to him, “Delta Central deserves responsive leadership that prioritises economic growth, youth empowerment, infrastructure development, and improved welfare for the people.
“I am encouraged by the confidence and support shown by the leadership of our great party. This forms part of broader efforts to build a stronger political platform that truly represents the interests of ordinary Nigerians.
“My commitment remains to the people of Delta Central. We must move beyond politics of promises to practical leadership that delivers opportunities, development, and inclusive governance.”
Akpodiete also stressed the need for unity among party members and supporters, noting that collective efforts would be critical to securing victory in 2027.
Notably, Prof. Alexander Akpodiete was the only Delta Central senatorial aspirant present at the high-profile stakeholders’ meeting hosted by Senator Dickson in Abuja.
