An Appeal Court in Argentina has announced that eight health specialists would be facing trial over their alleged role in the death of the country’s former football star, Diego Maradona.
The prosecutors have suggested that the eight health workers were accused of homicide with wanton disregard and would face between eight to 25 years in jail if found guilty.
Recall that the former Argentine footballer and technical coach died on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60 on heart complications after he had undergone brain surgery.
According to San Isidro Board of Appeals, the neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov and six other health workers were involved in Maradona’s medical care and would face the legal consequences.

On his part, one of the judges, Carlos Fabian Blanco, added that there was enough evidence brought forward by the prosecutors for the eight health professionals to stand trial.
Nursing coordinator Mariano Perroni, nurses Ricardo Omar Almiron and Gisella Madrid, psychologist Carlos Diaz, medical coordinator Nancy Forlini and clinical doctor Pedro Di Spagna will also be tried.
An autopsy conducted on the football legend indicated that Maradona died in his sleep of acute pulmonary edema, a buildup of fluid in the lungs, because of congestive heart failure.
The report also proved that the Maradona’s heart had suffered a series of medical problems due to drugs and alcohol, and that it weighed nearly twice as much as a normal heart.
However, a medical panel was established to probe Maradona’s death and concluded that several members of his medical team acted in an inappropriate, deficient and reckless manner.
The report said “the patient’s signs of risk of life were ignored,” adding that Maradona “showed unequivocal signs of a prolonged agony period” for at least 12 hours.
Reacting, Maradona’s daughters, Dalma, said, “Many times the process is painful and slow, and we will not stop until justice is done! Everyone that stopped doing their job (at someone’s request or because of ineffectiveness) will be judged for that!”
