The Delta State Police Command has restored calm in Asaba metropolis following a coordinated crackdown on hoodlums and criminal elements who attempted to disrupt New Year Eve celebrations, leading to the arrest of 43 suspects.
The operation, which commenced at about midnight on Thursday, January 1, 2026, was led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and involved Divisional Police Officers, tactical commanders and their personnel.
According to the Delta State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, the intensive township patrol was aimed at safeguarding residents, worshippers and commuters during the festivities.
Edafe said the suspects, taking advantage of the large crowds, engaged in various acts of lawlessness, including blocking major roads, illegal car racing, reckless and dangerous driving, and throwing fireworks at members of the public.
Some commuters were reportedly knocked down, while tyres were set ablaze at strategic junctions, causing widespread public disturbance and obstructing free movement, particularly for worshippers returning from New Year church services.
The situation escalated when the hoodlums allegedly attacked police patrol teams, hurling stones and other dangerous objects.
However, officers swiftly deployed lawful crowd control measures to disperse the mob, restore order and prevent a breakdown of law and order.
At the end of the operation, 43 suspects were arrested. Items recovered include 25 motor vehicles, eight tricycles, fireworks, various hard drugs and other offensive weapons.
The suspects are currently in police custody, while investigations are ongoing. Police said those found culpable would be charged to court.
The Delta State Police Command strongly condemned the criminal and unruly conduct, warning that any attempt to exploit festive periods to foment violence, obstruct public roads or attack security personnel would be met with firm and lawful resistance.
Normalcy has since been fully restored in Asaba, with continuous monitoring and intensified patrols in place to prevent further breaches of the peace.
The Command reassured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property and urged the public to celebrate responsibly, obey the law and promptly report suspicious activities to the police.
