Buhari Appoints Alkali Usman As Acting Inspector General Of Police

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Alkali Usman as the acting Inspector General of Police, the Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Digyadi has said on Tuesday.

The Council of State will take final decision on Alkali Usman’s appointment in a meeting to be held soon.
It is recalled that President Buhari had on February 4th, 2021 extended the tenure of Mohammed Adamu as the Inspector General of Police for three months.

President Buhari stated that the decision to accommodate Mohammed Adamu’s tenure for another three months was to give room for selection of competent officer.

The President’s decision, however, breached Section 7 Sub Section 6 of the Police Act 2020, which stated that a person appointed to the office of the Inspector General of Police shall hold office for four years.

The Police Act as signed by President Buhari on September 15, 2020 went further to state in Section 18 Sub Section 8 that every police officer shall, on recruitment or appointment, serve in the police force for 35 years or until he attains the age of 60 years.
