Communication Scholars Called to Action in War Against Crude Oil Theft

By Odili Ogochukwu

The management of Tantita Security Services Limited has called on communication scholars and media professionals to lend their expertise to the fight against crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism in Nigeria.

Speaking at the 12th Annual Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN), held September 3–4, 2025, at MBB Events Centre, Effurun, Delta State, the Executive Director of Operations and Technical at Tantita, Capt. Waredi Enisuoh, described oil theft as one of the most devastating forms of corruption confronting the nation.

According to him, crude theft not only undermines governance and erodes national revenue but also cripples community development in oil-producing areas.

“Beyond government action and security interventions, the role of communication professionals is crucial in shaping public consciousness against oil theft, exposing criminal syndicates, and amplifying the importance of transparency in the oil sector,” Enisuoh stated.

He urged scholars and practitioners in communication to use their research, advocacy, and media platforms to promote a cultural shift where acts of vandalism and crude theft are condemned by all.

Highlighting Tantita’s efforts, Enisuoh explained that the company, working with security agencies and host communities, had significantly reduced incidents of pipeline vandalism, illegal bunkering, and crude oil theft across the Niger Delta. He stressed that such gains must be consolidated through sustained awareness campaigns and communication-driven advocacy.

Commending ACSPN for addressing the theme “Corruption, Governance and Media in Nigeria” at the conference, Enisuoh encouraged participants to broaden their discourse to include the national and community-level dangers posed by oil theft.

He further assured that Tantita Security Services Limited remains committed to partnering with relevant stakeholders to protect Nigeria’s oil assets and ensure that the benefits of the nation’s resources are secured for all citizens.
