DOPF Applauds Delta Assembly for Passage of Community Security Corps Bill, Urges Swift Assent by Governor

The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has lauded the Delta State House of Assembly for the successful passage of the Delta State Community Security Corps Agency Bill, describing it as a timely and strategic move to enhance grassroots security across the state.

In a press release jointly signed by the Chairman, Emmanuel Enebeli, and Secretary, Shedrack Onitsha, the media body praised the legislature for its responsiveness to the growing concerns over rural insecurity, including banditry, kidnapping, and herder-farmer conflicts.

DOPF noted that it had consistently advocated for a community-oriented security framework to complement the efforts of conventional security agencies. It commended the Assembly for heeding the calls of the people and prioritizing legislation that directly addresses the safety and stability of communities, especially in rural areas.

“The establishment of the Community Security Corps is a pragmatic and necessary response to the realities on the ground,” the statement read. “This initiative will help restore confidence among residents and provide a legal framework for the recruitment, training, and deployment of security personnel who understand their local environments.”

The Forum called on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to urgently assent to the bill to facilitate its immediate implementation. According to DOPF, the prompt signing of the bill would signal strong political will and commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.

DOPF further urged the state government to ensure the new agency is backed by adequate funding, robust oversight, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including traditional rulers, community leaders, and security agencies, to ensure its effectiveness across Delta’s 25 local government areas.

The group emphasized that restoring security to farmlands would boost agricultural productivity and food security, thus contributing to the state’s overall economic development.

Reiterating its commitment to public engagement, DOPF pledged to support sensitization campaigns to raise awareness about the new law and its benefits to the people of Delta State.
