Earthquake Kills 56, Injures Scores In Indonesia
A 5.6-magnitude earthquake has on November 21, 2022, struck Indonesia’s West Java province, leaving 56 people dead and over 700 people hundred wounded.
West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil who confirmed the disaster, said 56 deaths from the quake, whose epicentre was the town of Cianjur, about 75km (45 miles) southeast of the capital, Jakarta was recorded.

Kamil told BBC that the 5.6 magnitude quake struck at a shallow depth of 10km (six miles). The national disaster agency (BNPB), in a news conference stressed that about 700 people were injured while over 300 homes were destroyed by earthquake.
The incident, however, has obstructed electricity distribution in the region and disrupted communications efforts.

The victims were taken to hospital for treatment and some buildings in Cianjur reduced almost entirely to rubble as worried residents huddled outside. There was possible aftershocks that the death toll could rise.
The area where the quake blew was crowded and inclined to landslides, with poorly-built houses. Rescuers have been evacuating people from collapsed buildings, and struggled to save a woman and her baby.

Earlier, AFP news agency quoted Herman Suherman, the head of administration in Cianjur town, said most injuries were bone fractures sustained from people being trapped by debris in buildings.
“The ambulances keep on coming from the villages to the hospital,” he said. “There are many families in villages that have not been evacuated.”
