The operatives of the Anambra State Anti-Touting Squad, ATS, on February 16, 2024, threw the Igbo Traders Association, Onitsha Chapter, into mourning after they allegedly shot one of its members dead and injured several others, while in an attempt to scout out a person who urinated in a restricted area.
The incident, which took place at the late hours of Friday, raised dust at the Science Equipment Market, Onitsha Bridgehead in Anambra State as people in the vicinity scamper for safety.
The ugly event had its way into the market when the ATS members entered the area in search of a person accused of urinating along Asaba-Onitsha expressway ran into the market for hideouts.
One of Traders who preferred anonymity because of the case’s sensitivity said the operatives allegedly shot sporadically in the market which led to the destruction and looting of people’s goods.
He added that the operatives killed a man simply because he urinated along the Onitsha-Asaba Expressway.
According to him, the boy ran into the market after urinating as the ATS members went after him violently but started shooting upon entering the market.
This caused pandemonium in the market as many sellers and buyers in the market sustained severe injuries while scampering to safety.
“Stray bullets hit two people who were rushed to the hospital after they had left. The victims sell drugs at Ogboogwu market. People’s goods were also destroyed and looted.
“They sealed our toilets and started collecting money from anyone they saw who urinated outside. This is the cause of the problem,” he explained.
When contacted, the Anambra State Police Command’s spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, saying that the state Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye, has ordered a full scale investigation of the incident.
