Police Release Dowen College Housemaster, Others, Send Report To DPP

Sequel to the release of the autopsy result conducted on Sylvester Oromoni, the Lagos State Police Command has stated the reasons why it set free the Dowen College Staff arrested in line with his death.

The Dowen College Housemaster alongside other staff were arrested for the gruesome murder of its student.

The murder of Sylvester Oromoni at Dowen College brought distrust in private schools and had attracted the reaction of most governors in the state.

Africa Investigative Magazine learned that the Lagos State Police had earlier said the autopsy test would determine the fate of the arrested suspects.

The command also said the Housemaster and others were released as the test carried out on the remains of the deceased vindicated them.

Africa Investigative Magazine further learned that the police also acted upon the court order as the force legal right to detain the suspects has elapsed.

Commenting, the commissioner of police, Lagos State Police Command, Hakeem Odumosu said, “Based on the result of the autopsy, the court order that we got elapsed and we released the housemaster and the others on bail.

“There was nothing that indicted them of murder. It is a murder case that is not bailable. Every other offense is bailable and they had been in custody for more than 20 days and that is an infringement on their fundamental human rights.

“Since medical and legal reports have not indicted them so far, I think there is a need to allow them to have their freedom because bail is not the end of the case.”

“We are not yet at the peak, but we have concluded our investigation and we have sent the report to the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

“We have gone through the medical one, which is the post-mortem. The post-mortem we carried out in Delta State, was also carried out in Lagos. The one done in Delta State was only witnessed by the parents of the deceased.

“After I held a meeting with the parties concerned, a post-mortem was carried out in Lagos. The corpse was brought from Delta to Lagos.

“The post-mortem was carried out in Lagos with all the parties involved, that is, parents of the deceased, parents of the students accused, the school authority, and government. These were the four parties that witnessed the post-mortem.”
