Tompolo Returns: Former Militant Leader Backs Delta State Government’s Security Efforts

Prominent Niger Delta leader, High Chief (Dr.) Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, has reaffirmed his commitment to peace, partnership, and sustainable development in Delta State, as he officially launched the Delta State Security Trust Fund in Asaba on Wednesday.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the Government House, Asaba, where he served as Chief Launcher, Tompolo described the initiative as a “strategic investment in peace, progress, and the protection of lives and property.”

He commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the Delta State Security Council for their foresight and proactive leadership in establishing a public–private framework to strengthen the state’s security architecture.

“Security is the cornerstone of sustainable development. No community, no investor, and indeed no government can thrive in an atmosphere of insecurity,” Tompolo stated.

The ex–militant leader, who has in recent years played a key role in enhancing maritime security in the Niger Delta region, said the Fund goes beyond financial contributions — describing it as a long-term commitment to ensuring a safer, stronger, and more prosperous Delta State.

He emphasized that maintaining security requires both adequate funding and collaboration among government, private sector actors, and local communities.

“As citizens and stakeholders, it is our collective responsibility to support this Fund with sincerity and commitment,” he urged.

Tompolo pledged his personal support to the initiative, saying his contribution was not merely monetary but symbolic of his enduring partnership and active engagement toward a peaceful Delta.

He expressed optimism that with shared commitment and unity of purpose, the state could achieve lasting peace and development.

“We can build a society where people live without fear, where children can dream freely, and where development flourishes without hindrance,” he added.

The event, which attracted top government officials, security chiefs, traditional rulers, business leaders, and other dignitaries, marked Tompolo’s first major public appearance in over a decade drawing wide attention and praise from across the Niger Delta region.
