The Chairman of the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee investigating employment racketeering, Mr Yusuf Gagdi has attributed the high unemployment rate in Nigeria to waivers given to ministries, departments and agencies of government.
The Chairman, during a resumed investigative hearing of the committee, said the waivers should be abolished to create employment opportunities in the country.
According to Mr Yusuf Gagdi, the committee will not hesitate to recommend the complete abolition of recruitment waivers to MDAs of government at the end of its investigation.
“Many qualified Nigerians have been deprived of employment opportunities because of waivers issued to some agencies as a cover to reward friends and allies. Waivers granted to government agencies have created many problems in the public service and encouraged job racketeering in the country,” he said.
Gagdi added that when waivers are given, public officers in charge of the establishments usually share available slots among themselves without the knowledge of young qualified Nigerians who should have been given the opportunity to apply.
