Former Indian Lawmaker, Brother Shot Dead

A former Indian lawmaker who was convicted for kidnapping and facing murder and assault charges, Atiq Ahmad, his brother, Ashraf Ahmad, have been shot dead by suspected assassins.
Government Authorities have announced that the dramatic attack which marked the end of two persons from Ahmad’s family was captured live on TV at Northern India.
It was gathered that the deceased, under the police escort were on their way to hospital for a medical checkup on the night of April 15, 2023, when three men disguised as journalists shot the two brothers from a close range in Prayagraj City, Uttar Pradesh state.

The gunrunners, immediately surrendered themselves to the police after the shooting, as one of them was chanting, “Jai Shri Ram” which means “Hail Lord Ram,” a slogan for battle cry for Hindu nationalists in their campaign against Muslims.
According to Police officer Ramit Sharma, the three assailants came on motorcycles posing as journalists.
He said, “They managed to reach close to Atiq and his brother on the pretext of recording a byte and fired at them from close range. Both sustained bullet injuries on the head. It all happened in seconds.”
On Thursday, Atiq Ahmad’s teenage son and another man, who had both been blamed for a recent murder, were killed by police in what was described as a shootout.
Atiq Ahmad, 60, was jailed in 2019 after he was convicted of kidnapping. He was a local lawmaker four times and was also elected to India’s parliament in 2004.
On his part, Atiq’s lawyer, Vijay Mishra, the incident on the police, saying “it is a clear failure of the police in ensuring the safety” of his clieclients.”
