Two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State and Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State and a few others have openly criticised the recent expulsion of the former Rivers State Governor and Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The governors who also fault the expulsion of several other party leaders, criticized the decision and called for productive efforts aimed at rebuilding the opposition party.
In separate statements on Sunday, both governors stressed that expulsion at a time when the PDP is grappling with internal divisions would only deepen the crisis and further weaken the party’s cohesion.
Governor Mutfwang described the move as “not a strategic step,” warning that removing influential figures at a delicate moment could derail ongoing reconciliation efforts.
He emphasised the need for unity, constructive dialogue, and collective action to reposition the PDP ahead of future national engagements.
Governor Fintiri, through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, said he would not support any action that could plunge the party into “unending crisis.” He insisted that the survival and stability of the PDP must take precedence over punitive measures.
“As a faithful party member, my position is clear: I stand for the peace and stability of the PDP, and I will not support anything that could lead to its disintegration,” Fintiri said. “Peace and reconciliation are the only ways forward for our great party.”
Their reactions come amid rising tensions within the PDP following the National Working Committee’s decision to expel Wike and other top party members over alleged anti-party activities.
Critics within the party argue that such measures risk alienating key stakeholders at a time when the PDP is seeking to strengthen its base and present a united front.
Both governors reiterated their commitment to a unified PDP and urged party leaders to prioritise dialogue, internal reforms, and inclusive engagement over punitive actions.
