A 26-year-old man, identified as Anikpe Valentine Chibuike has allegedly killed his 35-year-old girlfriend, Ogechukwu Mmadubugwua, in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The suspect, on December 9, 2025, midnight allegedly stabbed the victim in the neck with a knife during a confrontation fueled by suspicion of infidelity, an act that resulted in her death.
According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the State Police Command’s spokesman, Anikpe Valentine Chibuike, was arrested on January 7, 2026, by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, in connection with the death of Ogechukwu Mmadubugwu.
The Police also dismissed claims that the killing was carried out by people the suspect owed some money and described such narratives as false and misleading.
During interrogation, the suspect further told police that he had become emotionally distressed after going bankrupt while trying to establish a business for the deceased, a situation he claimed contributed to the fatal altercation.
Police also revealed that the suspect allegedly attempted to mislead investigators by dropping a fake letter claiming he had been kidnapped by individuals he owed money, in a bid to divert suspicion and escape after the incident.
As part of ongoing investigations, detectives have visited the mortuary where the single mother’s body was deposited, while other investigative procedures continue.
The Anambra State Police Command noted that the tragic incident has sparked public outrage and renewed concerns over domestic violence and relationship-related crimes.
The Command urged residents to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving disputes and to report early signs of domestic violence to security agencies to prevent avoidable loss of life.
The suspect, however, will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
