From NewsDesk

At least 36 soldiers and Mobile Police officers were reportedly killed after suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked two military formations in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The attacks happened around 1am on Friday in Buniyadi and Buni Gari, hometown of Governor Mai Mala Buni.

According to SaharaReporters, the terrorists attacked the Theatre Training Centre in Buniyadi and the 27 Task Force Brigade in Buni Gari almost at the same time, leading to heavy gun battles that lasted for several hours.

One of the soldiers who survived the attack said the insurgents overpowered parts of the camps during the midnight operation.

The soldier said three soldiers were killed at the 27 Task Force Brigade in Buni Gari, while many more casualties were recorded at the training centre in Buniyadi.

Another soldier confirmed that troops had prepared to reinforce the Buniyadi camp after hearing gunshots, but their own base also came under attack before they could move.

According to military sources, 17 Mobile Police officers undergoing training were killed during the attack. Ten soldiers attending training and six soldiers permanently deployed at the centre were also reportedly killed.

The total number of casualties from both attacks was put at 36.

Videos seen online showed the aftermath of the attacks and bodies of security personnel at the affected camps.

The latest assault has raised fresh concerns over the security situation in Nigeria’s North-East region despite repeated claims by authorities that Boko Haram insurgents had been weakened.
