A suspect arrested in connection with the killing of a nursing student in Imo State has confessed to taking part in the crime.
The victim, Wendy Achumba, was a student of the College of Nursing, Obowo.
According to sources in Umuadara, Umulogho community in Obowo Local Government Area, local youths arrested the suspect, identified as Onyema Okonkwo, after an investigation led by the youth leader, Chidiebere Iweajunwa.
The suspect was said to have confessed during a video interview that later went viral online.
Okonkwo allegedly admitted that he and another suspect identified as Emmanuel went to the victim’s residence around 7 p.m. and sexually assaulted her.
Sources said the victim was alone in the house at the time of the incident because her two roommates had travelled for their nursing practical experience.
“The house belongs to someone based in America. Three students were living there, but two had travelled for nursing experience, leaving her alone,” a community source said.
The suspect reportedly claimed that the victim rejected their sexual advances before they forced themselves on her.
He further stated that after the assault, he hit the victim with a stick, while the second suspect later used a knife on her.
The arrested suspect has been handed over to the police for further investigation.
At the time of this report, the spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, had not responded to inquiries as of the time of filing this report.
