Trump-Putin Call: What’s on the Agenda for Ukraine’s Future?

Odili Ogochukwu

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to discuss several pressing issues, including “land,” “power plants,” and “dividing up certain assets,” in a scheduled call. The Kremlin has confirmed the call but remains tight-lipped about the specific topics, fueling speculation about the potential agenda.

The call comes amid escalating tensions in Ukraine, where Ukrainian and Russian drone attacks continue to cause civilian casualties and power outages. Ukrainian officials have reported recent casualties, including a local resident in Donetsk and a 65-year-old woman killed by mortar fire in Sumy.

As the situation in Ukraine deteriorates, EU leaders are pushing for peace. The EU Foreign Affairs Council convened in Brussels to discuss diplomatic efforts, with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha urging the use of all diplomatic tools to pressure Russia into accepting peace proposals. European leaders, including French President Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Carney, have reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty while pressing Russia for clear commitments.

The war’s toll continues to mount, with Russia leveraging its numerical advantage and producing vast quantities of drones and munitions. As international leaders gather, the future of Ukraine remains uncertain, with both military and diplomatic efforts intensifying in the face of the ongoing crisis.

It’s worth noting that Trump and Putin have spoken before, with their previous conversation focusing on ending the war in Ukraine. However, the outcome of their upcoming call remains to be seen.
