The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has announced plans to commemorate the 2026 World Press Freedom Day in Asaba, Delta State, with emphasis on the role of journalism in fostering peace and preventing conflict.
In a statement issued on May 2, by the Secretary of the planning committee, Inneh-Ozah Barth, and its Chairman, Julius Oweh, the forum disclosed that the event will hold on May 6, at the DOPF Secretariat near St. Patrick’s College, Asaba, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
The organisers explained that although the global observance is marked on May 3, the event was rescheduled to May 6 to enable wider participation of stakeholders within and outside the state.
According to the statement, communication scholar at Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba, Dr. Gideon Uduchukwu Isika, will deliver the keynote lecture titled “Journalism as a Tool for Conflict Prevention and Peace Building,” in line with this year’s global theme on shaping a peaceful future through responsible media practice.
World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 following a recommendation from UNESCO. It traces its roots to the Windhoek Declaration, adopted by African journalists in Namibia, which called for a free, independent and pluralistic press.
The annual observance highlights the importance of press freedom, evaluates its state globally, defends the media from attacks, and honours journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
The forum added that the event will feature the Executive Assistant on New Media to the Delta State Governor, Felix Ofou, as Special Guest of Honour, alongside media professionals, scholars and practitioners.
DOPF noted that the gathering would provide a platform to reinforce ethical journalism, promote responsible reporting, and strengthen collaboration among media stakeholders in advancing peace, unity and sustainable development.
