Defending champions Argentina scored twice in the closing minutes to defeat England 2-1 on Wednesday at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, securing a place in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

England appeared destined for their first World Cup final since winning the tournament in 1966 after Anthony Gordon gave Thomas Tuchel’s side the lead in the 55th minute.

However, Lionel Scaloni’s men mounted a dramatic comeback. Enzo Fernández restored parity in the 85th minute before Lautaro Martínez headed home Lionel Messi’s cross two minutes into stoppage time to seal Argentina’s victory.

Argentina entered the semi-final after an impressive campaign in which they topped Group J before overcoming Cabo Verde in the Round of 32, Egypt in the Round of 16 and Belgium in the quarter-finals.

Lionel Messi has been central to the defending champions’ run, contributing crucial goals and assists throughout the tournament.

England, meanwhile, had reached the last four after finishing top of Group L and defeating DR Congo, co-hosts Mexico and Norway in the knockout rounds.

Despite leading for much of the second half, the Three Lions were unable to withstand Argentina’s late surge.

The victory sends Argentina into a second consecutive World Cup final, where they will face Spain on Sunday as they bid to retain the title they won in Qatar four years ago.
