Expert Warns Nigerians Against Frequent Solar System Failures Amid Power Crisis

Renewable energy expert Yakubu Yunusa has raised alarm over the increasing rate of failed solar power systems in Nigeria, warning that the trend is worsening the nation’s electricity crisis and eroding public confidence in renewable energy.

Yunusa, who spoke with journalists, said millions of naira have been wasted by households and businesses that rushed into solar investments without proper guidance. He explained that many systems collapse within months due to poor planning, the use of substandard products, and the engagement of unqualified installers.

“I have visited homes where brand-new solar panels were mounted on rooftops, yet the occupants still endured frequent blackouts. Many people invested their life savings into solar systems, only to have them fail within months,” he said.

He attributed most failures to avoidable mistakes, including skipping energy audits, purchasing cheap uncertified batteries and inverters, relying on untrained technicians, mismanaging heavy appliance usage, and neglecting routine maintenance.

He also expressed concern about the looming environmental risk posed by expired batteries and damaged panels, warning that Nigeria is unprepared for the safe disposal of solar waste.

Yunusa, who hails from Alagalani village in Kogi State, said his personal experience of living in a community without public electricity inspired his passion for renewable energy. Through his Light Up Solar Advocacy campaign, he urged Nigerians to seek professional audits, buy certified products, use trained installers, respect their system limits, and carry out regular servicing.

According to him, solar energy can provide reliable power if properly managed, but cutting corners will only result in wasted investments, hazards, and disappointment.
