Kebbi State has been thrown into mourning following the death of the Emir of Zuru, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Sani Sami (retd).

The traditional ruler passed away on Saturday night in a London hospital after a brief illness. He was 81 years old.

The state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Garba Umar-Dutsinmari, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday in Birnin Kebbi.

He described the late monarch as a highly respected leader whose reign contributed significantly to peace and development within the Zuru Emirate and across Kebbi State.

“The government extends its heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the late Emir, the Zuru Emirate Council, the people of Zuru, and the entire Kebbi State. May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus,” the statement read.

Born in 1944, Maj.-Gen. Sami had a distinguished career in the Nigerian Army before ascending the throne of Zuru. He was known for his strong advocacy for unity, education, and community development.

He was survived by four wives and seven children. Burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the emirate council in due course.
