The leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr. Nnamdi Kanu has been convicted on the third count of terrorism by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The conviction, delivered on November 20, 2025, concerns Kanu’s membership in IPOB which the judge declared to be an act of terrorism.
The ruling is part of seven charges brought against the IPOB leader by the Federal Government. Justice Omotosho is still delivering judgment on four additional counts, each carrying a maximum penalty of death.

The court is expected to announce Kanu’s sentence once rulings on all counts are concluded.
Before delivering the conviction, Justice Omotosho accused Kanu of unruly conduct and disrespect toward the court, noting that the defendant’s alleged rudeness culminated in a disruption of proceedings.
Kanu has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, following what his legal team describes as an “extraordinary rendition” from Kenya.
He faces terrorism-related allegations including incitement, operating an unlawful organization, and activities said to threaten national security charges he has consistently denied.
The court had earlier fixed November 20 for judgment after Kanu failed to open his defence, despite being granted six days to do so. He retains the legal right to appeal Justice Omotosho’s decisions at the appellate court.
